The Scotland forwards Ross Ford and Jonny Gray have been cleared to play in the Rugby World Cup quarter-final against Australia after winning their appeals against suspensions for foul play.

Hooker Ford and lock Gray were banned for three weeks for making a dangerous tackle during the Pool B game against Samoa.

The pair were left out of the team named by coach Vern Cotter for tomorrow's game against the Wallabies at Twickenham, replaced by hooker Fraser Brown and lock Tim Swinson.

Following a review of the evidence, however, the Appeal Committee dismissed the finding that Ford and Gray had committed a dangerous tackle because the opposing player had not been dropped or driven.

Cotter has up til an hour before play to change his lineup.

Meanwhile Ireland suffered a massive blow on the eve of their quarter-final against Argentina when first five Johnny Sexton was ruled out with a groin injury.

Sexton, 30, had been named in the starting lineup despite limping off the field in last weekend's pool win over France but felt some discomfort after training yesterday.

The Irish playmaker was sent for scans which revealed he had a minor abductor strain, prompting team officials to withdraw him from the match and replace him with Ian Madigan.
