Northland looks into local government reform

05:14 am on 30 April 2009

Northland Mayors are exploring the idea of further local government reform in their region.

The three mayors, the Rodney District Council and the Northland Regional Council have been discussing the implications of the Auckland super city plan.

NRC chair Mark Farnsworth says the last round of local body amalgamations was in 1989, and the time is right for a review.

He says the new Auckland council will be one of the biggest local bodies in the world, and other regions need to consider how they can aggregate to match its influence.

Mr Farnsworth says the present model of local government in the north is looking tired and the councils have agreed to investigate alternative options.
