Possible war ordnance cleanup in Vanuatu, pending US consent

09:43 am on 23 September 2013

The Deputy Chief of Mission of the United States Embassy to Vanuatu says she will consult the US over the Second World War rusty machinery heap that was bulldozed into the sea in Santo by American troops.

Melanie Higgins says she was not aware of the ordnances in the water at "One Million Dollar Point" before she arrived in Port Vila.

The Government is organising a major military operation called "Operation Render Safe" in the Solomon Islands to clear all ordnance throughout the islands.

Miss Higgins says if her Government agrees, a similar operation will take place at One Million Dollar Point in Santo.
