A crash caused a two-hour delay in Northland as people head north for the Labour Day holiday weekend.
A car and van collided on Paihia Road about a kilometre from Opua, leaving a person with serious injuries.
The crash closed the north and southbound lanes, with a delay of at least two hours expected, police said in a statement about 8pm.
The road had since reopened, police said in an update after 10pm.
Inquiries into the circumstances of the crash were ongoing.
