07:01 am on 7 December 2010

There'll be a record field of just under 1200 athletes from 27 nations in next month's fifth Challenge Wanaka scenic iron distance triathlon or the Lake Wanaka short course race.

Entrants for the flagship event include the women's world number Rebekah Keat of Australia and New Zealand's Gina Crawford.

Australia's Courtney Ogden and Denmark's Jimmy Johnnsen are among the leading men.

The Contract Tri Series attracts some of New Zealand's biggest names in short course triathlon, including former world champion Samantha Warriner.

Triathlon magazine in the United States has voted Challenge Wanaka one of the world's top 10 most scenic races.
