Solomons Tourism Minister to visit island where dophins were slaughtered

The Solomon Islands Minister of Tourism will visit the island of Fanalei to speak with traditional leaders about the killing of dolphins.

The recent massacre of 1000 dolphins by villagers in Malaita province has caused widespread condemnation from conservationists.

The Minister, Samuel Manetoali says the country has gone from the highs of hosting the Festival of Pacific Arts, the visit of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, to this.

He says this is an issue of concern for the government as it has painted a really bad image for tourism.

He says as Solomon Islands tries to earn more from tourism, a solution that would be a win-win for all parties must be found.

However he says whilst there is recognition of cultural practices, there are now modern considerations that must be taken into account.

He says Solomon Islands is a member of the global family and therefore cannot act in isolation to issues of concern around the World.
