Three Australians and a New Zealander are tied at the top of the leaderboard on 5-under after the first round of play at the Fiji International golf tournament at Natadola.

Nick Cullen, Jarryd Felton and Andrew Dodt all shot 67 alongside Kiwi Ben Campbell.

Campbell was one of the few players to thrive in blustery and windy afternoon conditions, nailing seven birdies during his opening round.

"I think around here when the wind's like this, you've just got to keep the ball in play," he said.

"It was actually quite tough because reading the greens, you've got to take the wind into account as well...I just played pretty solid all day, which is always nice."

Local hope, Sam Lee, shot 2 under 70 for a share of 8th place while the South African four-time major winner and former world number one Ernie Els shot an even round to be tied for 19th.

Lee said he started pretty well.

"I knew it was going to be windy...so I was mentally prepared, and having played this course a lot of times in the wind, I think I was a bit more comfortable," he said.

"Tried to stay calm, and I got a bit jittery first few holes, but yeah, I stayed calm and tried to make as little mistakes as possible."

18 players signed for an under-par first round but only five of those had to handle the tricky afternoon conditions.

Fiji's three-time major winner Vijay Singh who remains the biggest local drawcard, is one shot outside the projected cut having carded a four-over 76.

The second round tees off this morning.
