Heavy snow is expected for Fiordland and southern parts of the West Coast through to Saturday evening.
MetService said a strong flow was set to move northwest across the South Island's west coast, bringing heavy rain and strong wind as far inland as the lakes region.
A warning was in place for Fiordland and the West Coast south of Harihari, with 25cm to 40cm expected to fall between 5pm tonight and 9pm tomorrow.
The heaviest fall was likely to be in Fiordland tomorrow morning, with 10cm to 15cm of snow expected to fall in about six hours.
The alpine passes and other high South Island roads, as well as the Desert Road in the North Island, could also continue to see snowfall through Sunday, with a slight possibility of falls down to 400m around Southland, Clutha and Dunedin.
