Medsafe monitoring US concerns over paracetamol

New Zealand drug regulator Medsafe is closely monitoring developments in the United States over concerns about side-effects from paracetamol, including liver damage.

The US Food and Drug Agency has been advised to reduce the single maximum dose of the common painkiller from 1000mg to 650mg.

It has also been advised to reduce the maximum daily dose, but there are no specifications as to how much.

Medsafe group manager Stewart Jessamine says though New Zealand has the same maximum dosage as in the US, pack sizes available here are much smaller.

Dr Jessamine says Medsafe is contacting the Food and Drug Agency to try to obtain the information from the advisory committee to examine what drove the recommendations.

He says until then, the best advice he can offer is for people to always look at the label and follow instructions.
