An estimated 100 owners of storm damaged homes in Auckland will receive grants to future-proof their properties and continue living in them.
Auckland Council has decided it will split the grants in two, one for design and consent and the other for construction of mitigations, such as retaining walls and lifting homes.
The council requires this to cost no more than a quarter of the property's capital value (CV) and be completed within two years.
The cost of the grants scheme is being shared with the Crown through the co-funded Storm Recovery package.
Council's group recovery manager Mat Tucker said funding feasible mitigations to a property had multiple benefits.
"Firstly and most importantly the grants enable more whānau to stay in their homes and communities. They also reduce the environmental impact of demolishing or deconstructing buildings, and they're more cost-effective for ratepayers than voluntary Category 3 buyouts."
Tucker added that he expected about 100 to 120 properties would be eligible for the grants, in the 2P category.
Council had indicated most homeowners would not receive their category until next year.
Homeowners will be responsible for managing the work on their property, including finding professional services and tradespeople and the normal building consent and resource consent requirements still apply.
