Government minister Maurice Williamson is refusing to rule out a tilt at the Auckland mayoralty later this year.
The National Party MP has held the seat of Pakuranga since 1987.
He is a minister outside the Cabinet, with responsibilities for building and construction, customs, land information and statistics.
Mr Williamson says he has had approaches from many people wanting him to challenge mayor Len Brown in October.
He says he is considering the idea, but has not made any decision.
Mr Williamson has made headlines in recent weeks for his speech in Parliament in support of same-sex marriage which has been viewed millions of times online.
