Motion to create three seats for women MPs in PNG may face months of delays

14:38 pm on 27 March 2009

A motion to create three non elected seats for women in PNG's parliament for three years, may now not be heard until next year.

The effort to increase women's representation was taken off the table after it ran into political opposition.

It is due to be introduced next session, but scheduled repairs to parliament house mean sittings may be delayed .

PNG's Minister of Community Development, Dame Carol Kidu, says the next sitting should only be a few months away:

"It's supposed to be in May according to the calender, but there's supposed to be major repairs to Government House and we may not sit for quite a few months so we may lose a year on it and I would have to get it in next year's budget then."
