Hawke's Bay police have stopped carrying arms as gang tensions ease, but a general arming order for Tairawhiti, covering the Gisborne area, is still in place.

All officers have been carrying arms since a fight erupted between Black Power and Mongrel Mob members in the Napier suburb of Taradale two weeks ago, which resulted in one person being shot.

RNZ Hawke's Bay reporter Anusha Bradley says that's no longer the case in Hawke's Bay and it's become apparent what led to the incident.
