Women in the Federated States of Micronesia could be guaranteed representation in Congress if a new bill is passed into law.

The bill proposes establishing a female congressional seat for each of the FSM's four states.

The Kaselehlie Press reports a two-year term has been proposed for each seat.

However, the paper said the bill proposed that women elected on the basis of state equality would become non-voting members.

Women are not excluded from running for general Congressional seats or from voting in Congress but to date none has been elected.

The paper said initial reactions to the bill had been positive.
