Labour claims cervical screening on hold

20:12 pm on 8 April 2013

The Labour Party is worried some parts of the national cervical screening programme have been put on hold to save money.

Health spokesperson Annette King said six projects in the programme were delayed in the 2011/12 financial year due to staff vacancies at the Ministry of Health.

Ms King believes those vacancies are the result of the Government's pressure on the ministry to reduce spending.

She said there are now questions about the quality of the screening programme.

Associate Health Minister Jo Goodhew said a number of those vacancies have now been filled and all projects in the cervical screening programme are on track.
