Bomb reported in Aleppo

09:04 am on 10 September 2012

The state news agency in Syria says a car bomb in the country's largest city, Aleppo, killed at least 17 people and wounded 40 on Sunday.

State television showed images of damaged buildings and rescue workers pulling survivors from the rubble.

The agency said the explosion occurred near a hospital and a school.

"Terrorists", the term the Syrian government uses for rebels, were blamed.

Fighting in Aleppo has intensified since government forces began an offensive in July against rebels seeking to make the city their base.
