Anadarko has started drilling for oil off the coast of Raglan.
The company has announced the initial process known as 'spudding-in' began at 2.30am on Tuesday.
Corporate affairs manager Alan Seay said the Noble Bob Douglas will drill for 70 days, when it expects to reach its target depth.
Anadarko said it has not been stopped by a protest vessel nearby.
