Solomons police to probe RAMSI prostitution claims

20:12 pm on 15 November 2006

The Solomon Islands police have been asked to launch an investigation into complaints of prostitution involving RAMSI personnel and local women.

The complaint is now before police investigators following a letter written by the prime minister.

Manasseh Sogavare says the government has been receiving direct complaints from people witnessing such activities at the RAMSI headquarters at the Guadalcanal Beach Resort and other locations in Honiara.

Mr Sogavare says this is a concern which has been quietly raised with the government.

RAMSI officials have said there is no evidence of the claim.

Prostitution is illegal and Mr Sogavare says RAMSI personnel are protected by immunity provisions.
