MetService says an active front will move across the west and north of the North Island tomorrow morning bringing squally thunderstorms, with heavy rain and hail to Northland, Auckland, Great Barrier Island, Coromandel Peninsula, Waikato, Waitomo and Taranaki.

The weather forecaster says there is a moderate risk of the thunderstorms becoming severe, producing damaging wind gusts in excess of 110-kilometres per hour and a slight chance of a small tornado.

There is also a severe thunderstorm watch in place for Kapiti-Horowhenua and Wellington until 9pm tonight.
