Before Auckland flooded badly on Friday evening University of Auckland Urban Planning Senior Lecturer Timothy Welch wrote about the idea of 'spongy cities' to cope with increased climate change rainfall.
The idea is that instead of building bigger and better pipes to deal with the extra water, the approach should be more about making areas more porous and planting more trees.
Timothy talks to Jesse about the sponge city concept and how much of a difference some simple steps could make.
