09:26 am on 31 May 2011

The Solomon Islands Police Force has opened 17 new houses for its staff and their families in the capital of Temotu province, Lata.

It's part of an infrastructure project overseen by the Regional Assistance Mission or RAMSI, which aims to see a total of 84 houses constructed around the country for police staff.

The police minister, Clay Forau Soalaoi, says the new houses in Lata will play a vital role in strengthening the police.

RAMSI's special co-ordinator, Nicholas Coppel, says the new houses will allow the police to transfer officers from across the country to Temotu Province.
