More Maori females now in education

06:03 am on 18 December 2010

Women's Affairs Minister Hekia Parata is welcoming a report showing marked improvement in Maori women's participation in education.

The United Nations report measures New Zealand's compliance with the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms Of Discrimination Against Women.

Ms Parata says that since the last report was filed four years ago, the participation and achievement level of Maori girls in the school system has improved by 47%.

However, too many girls are still leaving school without NCEA level 2.

Ms Parata says Maori women now make up 22% of all enrolees at tertiary institutions.

She told Waatea News that improvements need to start with getting more Maori mothers to enrol their children at pre-school.
