The Finance Minister has announced 5000 new homes for the Tamaki area of Auckland over the next decade.
Tamaki includes parts of Glen Innes, Point England and Panmure on the cusp of Auckland City and East Auckland.
The minister Bill English said 7500 homes would be built but once current houses were removed or demolished that would result in a net increase of 5000 homes.
They would be a combination of social and affordable housing, he said.
Housing New Zealand currently owns about half the 5000 houses already in the area.
Mr English has not specified what the make-up of the new homes will be.
He said a new childcare centre catering for up to 60 children would be built also.
