Parole denied for killer caregiver

A former Barnardos worker who murdered a toddler in her care has been denied parole.

Shae Hammond, who was 17 months old, died from a badly fractured skull after staying the night with Elizabeth Healy in Christchurch in 1997.

As well as a life sentence for murder, Healy is also serving jail time for injuring a second toddler and poisoning a third child she baby-sat.

Relatives of the children say they believe Healy has not been properly treated and has made no major changes.

A Parole Board report says Healy still denies all responsibility in the crimes.

However, it says she is on the road to release, behaving well in prison, has a job and is delivering negative drug tests.

The board says Healy will remain in jail, as she still poses an undue risk to the community.
