Asylum seeker seriously injured after Nauru self-harm protest

19:48 pm on 27 September 2014

Australia's Refugee Action Coalition says an Iranian asylum seeker is believed to be in a serious condition after slashing his throat in protest at Canberra's decision to resettle refugees in Cambodia.

The coalition says protests have erupted in the centre in response to Cambodia's decision to accept the refugees in return for foreign aid as well as the announcement that Australia intends to re-introduce temporary protection visas.

As well as the Iranian man, at least two people are believed to have stitched their lips together.

About 100 police remain on site to try and quell any protests tonight.

The Refugee Action Coalition says protestors at another camp on the island have asked permission from the Nauru police to march on the Australian embassy.
