A man is in custody after police searched for a person who may have been carrying a weapon in Gisborne earlier on Tuesday.

On Tuesday afternoon, police closed a section of coastal State Highway 35 near Turihaua Beach, about 20 minutes north of the city, as an operation was underway to find the person.

The road has since reopened after police said the operation moved north.

Police said the man was in custody in relation to an incident where a firearm was reportedly discharged.

There were no reports of any injuries and no one else was being sought in relation to the incident, police said.
