Police say man tasered before shot

Police have confirmed the man shot dead by an officer in New Plymouth at the weekend was tasered before dying from two gunshot wounds.

Police have said Adam Te Rata Charles Morehu from Waitara shot at officers and one returned fire, fatally wounding him, as he and Kevin Bishell left the New Plymouth Golf Club after burgling it early on Saturday.

They say post-mortem results show that Mr Morehu, 32, was hit by two shots in the torso.

Superintendent Russell Gibson said on Monday that a taser was deployed before Mr Morehu was shot, but does not know why information about that was omitted earlier.

"We have endeavoured to give a very full and upfront account of everything that's happened. Why the taser was not mentioned at the outset, to be honest, I'm not sure."

Mr Gibson said the golf club site remains under guard and a scene examination should be completed on Tuesday.

The spokesperson for the Morehu family, John Niwa, said confirmation of the two gun shot wounds raises even more questions for his whanau about the events leading to his death.

Mr Morehu's tangi is set to begin at Owae marae in Waitara on Tuesday. He leaves behind a partner and two young children, aged 5 and 2.

Meanwhile, Kevin Bishell, 32, appeared in New Plymouth District Court on aggravated burglary and firearms charges on Monday and did not enter a plea. He was remanded in custody until 26 June.
