18:14 pm on 29 January 2022

Omicron cases have taken over Delta cases in New Caledonia which has now been found in more than 17 out of 33 communities across the three provinces.

New Caledonia has recorded 691 new cases in the 24 hours to Friday morning, bringing the total number of active cases to 4193.

The New Caledonian Health Department said on Thursday there's a steady rise of cases but also of the stable hospitalisation numbers.

Authorities warn the public that people should wear face masks in any type of public gathering even inside establishments.

"It notably circulates among children. We know very well that wearing masks, the rules of hygiene is mandatory but it's much more difficult to push that rule when it's at the family home," Dr Sylvie Laumond told French media.

PCR tests are overloading health officials who have decided to put out a new strategy aimed at curbing the number of people getting PCRs.

Some tests might require payment if not recommended by a doctor, this new strategy will come into action starting from February 1.

PCR tests will be reserved for vulnerable people, the hospitalised, and travellers leaving the country depending on the destination country's requirements.

Health officials reminded people to take the third dose especially for vulnerable people, and for the non-vaccinated.

More than 28,000 children between the age of 5-11 have all received at least one injection since the opening of this age gap on January 10.
