A 5.8 magnitude earthquake late last night hit 25km east of Stratford.

The earthquake at 11.49pm could be felt across the North and South Islands, including as far away as Wanaka, with 35,000 people reporting they felt the quake on the GeoNet website.
GeoNet says the earthquake occurred 187 kilometres below the Taranaki region.
