Judging is under way at the Ellerslie International Flower Show in Christchurch.

The show has returned to the city after being cancelled last year when the February earthquake occurred shortly before the event was to open.

Twenty-five judges from New Zealand and overseas are carrying out judging at North Hagley Park until midday on Tuesday.

Managing director Dave Mee says there were concerns about whether people would return after last year's cancellation, but that is not the case.

He says many of this year's exhibitors were to take part last year and wanted to return because they had a sense of unfinished business.

There are about 90 horticultural exhibits and about 30 of these are big gardens.

Mr Mee says that is on par with numbers in previous years.
