Retiring some farmland from production is part of a plan for cleaning up Lake Ellesmere in Canterbury.

The Government, Canterbury Regional Council, Fonterra and Ngai Tahu have signed an agreement and contributed funding for an $11 million restoration project.

Environment Minister Nick Smith says some of the money may be used for compensate farmers for turning land into wetlands that will help to restore the lake's water quality.
