At a council meeting yesterday, Rebecca Amundsen was chosen after a motion from fellow councillors.

Her predecessor, Darren Ludlow, resigned last month, saying he was overcommitted.

However, councillors have since confirmed to RNZ that nine of them held a secret meeting with mayor Tim Shadbolt and signed an order calling for Mr Ludlow's resignation the week before he went.

Mr Shadbolt has said Mr Ludlow threatened to sue him if he told the full story behind the sudden resignation.
