Samoa PM irked by Fiji interim regime's communications

16:22 pm on 7 November 2008

The Prime Minister of Samoa, Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi, has taken issue with the Fiji interim Government's version of his meeting this week with Fiji envoy, Ross Ligairi.

In a statement, Tuilaepa says he had wanted an update on recent political developments in Fiji from Mr Ligairi, and the visit was accepted on this basis.

He says it is unacceptable that the interim Government then saw fit to put out a media statement that attributed views and even quoted what he was supposed to have said from a meeting that he considered to be confidential.

Tuilaepa says Mr Ligairi knows very well the message which he wanted relayed back to the interim Prime Minister.

He says it was not what was reported in the Interim Government's media release.

Tuilaepa says he hopes the special envoy has now conveyed his message, which out of normal respect for leaders in the Pacific, is not to be conveyed through the media.
