A survey funded by the alcohol industry has found many people don't understand the standard drink measurement.
An online survey by education programme Cheers! of about 1500 people over the age of 16 found 61% did not know what a standard drink was.
One standard drink contains 330ml of beer, 30ml of spirits or 100ml of wine, and equates to about 10 grams of alcohol.
The programme's director Jessica Venning-Bryan says it wants people to understand that the average person can process one standard drink an hour.
"Just having that little bit of information will help people start to plan their drinking occasions in a different way."
Ms Venning-Bryan says a campaign about standard drinks will feature in newspapers and online.
