Fuel tanker blows up, killing 12

18:32 pm on 27 October 2011

At least 12 people have been killed and 33 injured in a fuel tanker explosion in northern Afghanistan.

The vehicle was only a few kilometres from Bagram air base when the blast occurred at around 5.30pm on Tuesday.

Bagram is the largest base for American forces in Afghanistan.

A second explosion occurred when people arrived to steal fuel leaking from the tanker after a magnetised bomb blew a hole in it.

Parwan province governor Basir Salangi told the BBC it was a terrorist attack.
