Tropical cyclone Fili is now moving to the south southeast away from New Caledonia.
By this evening the system's centre is expected to be about 140 kilometres to the south of Noumea.
The Category Two cyclone is bringing strong to gale force winds to parts of the main island but this should ease by Friday morning.
Forecasters say, close to its centre, it is bringing sustained winds of 55 knots, or just over 100 kilometres an hour.
