Weekend weather: 'A few wet days coming up for most'

10:19 am on 6 September 2019

Spring has arrived and weather around the country will be inconsistent as a result, MetService says.

A low over New Zealand has been tracking eastwards over the upper North Island since yesterday afternoon.

Strong, cool southwesterlies will follow today but ease by Saturday.

Meanwhile, a cold front sweeps up the South Island on Sunday, while a warm front ahead of the next low from the west moves over the North Island.

MetService meteorologist Rob Kerr said rain was expected.

"There's a few wet days coming up for most, with rain giving way to showery southwesterlies during today and Friday.

"Respite, although brief, is on the way, as a ridge brings settled conditions across the country on Saturday ahead of more rain affecting many regions on Sunday."

It is possible showers could affect the All Blacks-Tonga game in Hamilton tomorrow afternoon.
