DoC continues to investigate reports of kea shootings

The Department of Conservation (DoC) is continuing an investigation into reports a group of kea were shot near Nelson last week.

The protected native parrots were allegedly shot at a forestry site in the Golden Downs area.

It is understood that about 15 kea were in the area where the shooting supposedly happened.

A DoC Nelson spokesperson said they hoped to know more within a few days.

Kea are classified as nationally endangered and are in decline, with their numbers estimated to be fewer than 5000.
