Youth focus at American Samoa climate talks

The organisers of next month's Climate Change Summit in American Samoa are planning a Youth Awareness Day as a lead-up to the summit.

The Climate Change Summit is planned for February the 1st and 2nd and will have 60 participants from the region, Hawaii and the U.S. mainland.

The environmental planner for the Coastal Zone Management Program, Lauren Wetzel, says activities are planned to help young people understand climate change and teach them what they can do to reduce the territory's carbon footprint.

"Some other things they can do is just re-use clothes, like from their brothers and sisters that are older and passed down. You don't need to continually buy new clothes and update your wardrobe if a shirt looks great and it could be used again."

Lauren Wetzel says young people can also encourage their parents not to use plastic bags and to car-pool.
