19:02 pm on 5 December 2014

A New Zealander has been arrested in Bali for trying to bring nearly 2kg of methamphetamine into the country.

Fairfax's Indonesia correspondent Michael Bachelard said today the 52-year-old Dannevirke man was picked up by Balinese police on Monday after they found 1.7kg of methamphetamine in his backpack.

Mr Bachelard told Radio New Zealand's Checkpoint programme the man could be imprisoned for up to three months while police investigate. He would then appear before a court.

He said the man was carrying enough drugs to make him eligible for the death penalty.
