No destructive tsunami forecast after Fiji quake

14:53 pm on 3 January 2006

The Pacific tsunami warning centre in Hawaii says a destructive region-wide wave wasn't generated after a undersea earthquake in the Fiji islands region this morning.

Scientific data recorded the event at 11.14 New Zealand time at seven on the Richter scale.

The quake was centred about three kilometres from Vatoa Island is the Southern Lau group, and occured at a depth of more than 560 kilometres below the earth's surface.

The senior seismologist at the Fiji government's Mineral Resource department, Lasarusa Vuetibau, says the quake was too deep to have been felt by the residents of Vatoa island.

"Right now we're still waiting for calls from people from Vatoa island. We doubt it was ever felt on the island and we don't expect any damage report. These deep earthquakes, they happen about six times in a year, and it shouldn't trigger any tsunami at all, because they're too deep."
