The President of the New Zealand Institute of Architects says the decision to strengthen the Wellington Central Library building is the most sustainable choice.

An engineers assessment in March last year raised concerns about its safety in the event of a significant earthquake. Since then, it's been closed.

Wellington City Councillors voted unanimously to revamp the existing building on Wednesday.

Designed by New Zealand architect, Ian Athfield, the library building is also a key part of New Zealand's architectural heritage.
