Temaru poised to attend UN decolonisation vote

The French Polynesian president is poised to go to the United Nations for a fourth time since December as part of his campaign to have his territory re-inscribed on the UN decolonisation list.

A redrafted resolution has been lodged with the UN General Assembly amid expectations it will be voted on before the end of the month.

Oscar Temaru says he is not sure when he will fly out as France is lobbying very hard and behind closed doors to stop the resolution from being passed.

The territory's opposition is outraged at the decolonisation bid and has decried as shameful an invitation by the president of territorial assembly, Jacqui Drollet, for all party leaders to go to New York for the occasion.

The Tahoeraa says there is disconnect between Mr Drollet and the reality of thousands of citizens.
