Police believe a New Zealand couple who fled to Hong Kong with millions of dollars may no longer be together.

Leo Gao and Kara Hurring, also known as Kara Yang, left the country last week after they were mistakenly given a $10 million overdraft by Westpac and $3.8 million remains unaccounted for.

Detective Senior Sergeant David Harvey says police have finished speaking with an unnamed relative who was with the couple but returned to Auckland on Monday.

Mr Harvey says the relative told police Ms Hurring was still in the Hong Kong area, but did not know were Mr Gao is.

Police are working on a request for assistance from the Chinese government.
