State Highway 73 through Arthur's Pass will be closed during the day for two weeks in December, to allow a section of it to be resurfaced.
Waka Kotahi senior asset manager Mark Pinner said the closure will be inconvenient for regular road users, but the dates were chosen after extensive engagement with travel, hospitality and freight operators.
The road will be closed from 10am till 6pm from 4-15 December; but it will be fully open for the weekend of 9-10 December.
The townships of Arthur's Pass and Ōtira on either side of the route will still be accessible throughout.
The work to be done is between the viaduct and the Ōtira Rock Shelter.
