A man pulled from the water at Ōhope Beach in Bay of Plenty this afternoon has died.

The man, in his 40s, was pulled out of the water shortly before 1.30pm and emergency services were called.
Police said he died at the scene despite being given medical assistance.
The death will be referred to the coroner.
