A Hamilton city councillor, Philip Yeung has died at the age of 60.
He had been suffering from cancer.
Born in Hong Kong, Mr Yeung came to New Zealand in 1996 and worked as an interpreter before joining the council as an ethnic development adviser.
He was elected to the council in 2013 and re-elected last year.
The council is planning a public memorial service to celebrate his life.
An obituary published on the council's website describes Mr Yeung as "a true man of the people".
"His personal experience as a migrant would inform much of his professional work with the council and help him to develop extensive connections into Hamilton's ethnic communities."
He is survived by his wife Alice and their daughter Jeannie.
