A 31-year-old man has been charged with injuring with intent to injure and resisting police, and is due to appear in Rotorua District Court today.

The pair were injured just before midday on Thursday, after a male in custody became aggressive while being escorted to the toilet.

The injured staff are now at home recovering.

A spokesperson said one of the police staff was knocked unconscious.

In an attempt to restrain the man, the police used pepper spray which was ineffective so they used a taser to restrain the man.

Police said it was an extremely violent situation and were grateful their injuries weren't worse.

Charges are being considered.
