Eight helicopters are continuing to fight a massive fire about 20 kilometres out of Queenstown.
Fire and Emergency were alerted to the blaze at 4.35pm yesterday, near Mount Crichton, that it is now covering about 200 hectares.
A spokesperson said four ground crews are also battling the fire but winds are pushing it up under the mountain.
"The fire is burning in the 24 mile creek...Firefighters and helicopters are working to contain it," they said.
People in the area will see ash fall and while it's not expected to be hot, people should be vigilant, Fire and Emergency noted.
Anyone impacted by smoke or ash should keep doors and windows closed and people experiencing health issues should contact Healthline, the spokesperson urged.
In a statement on social media, Queenstown Lakes District Council said it's aware of the fire and is monitoring the situation.
