The transport sector is jumping for joy over the National Party's plans to essentially restart the old roads of national significance.

National would spend almost $25 billion over 10 years building roads across the country, including four lanes all the way from Whangārei to Tauranga, a key trade route.

Transporting New Zealand chief executive Dom Kalasih says he's thrilled with the plans, and it's refreshing for a political party to put a focus on roads.

Kalasih spoke to Guyon Espiner.
